Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical biological terror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
